How to Become a Pilot?

At Waviators, we are all equipped to solve your question on "How to become a pilot" starting from your Medical till you get into an airline as a First officer sitting on right seat followed by your up gradation to Captain sitting on the Left seat.

Basic Requirements to start: 

Age— The applicant should be at least 16 years to kick start your training! 

Educational Qualification : 10+2 With Mathematics and Physics ( You can still  start the process if you do not have Mathematics & Physics by clearing additional exams which we are here to guide you)

-PROCESS OF TRAINING- 

1.Medical fitness

The first key step in your pilot Training process is Class 2 Medical Examination conducted by DGCA approved Medical Practitioner. You will be presented in any NABL Approved laboratory for some basic Tests like X-Ray, CBP, ECG, LFT etc and any special tests if the candidate is having any previous medical history. Followed by Review of this tests and physical examination by DGCA approved doctor.

Once the Doctor is satisfied with the results, you will be issued a CA-35 which is a preliminary approval for you to start your training followed by Medical Assessment Certificate issued by DGCA.

2. Clearing DGCA CPL Examinations & Computer Number:

Now its time for you to prepare for ground examinations conducted by DGCA every 3 months . A student has to prepare and clear following Subjects:

 Air Navigation, Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorology, Aircraft & Engines, WPC RTR(conducted by DOT every 2 months).

Each subject has its own syllabus to make you a proficient and theoretically strong pilot to start your Flying Training. 

Computer Number is like any  Roll number issued by DGCA to the candidate to attend the examinations conducted by DGCA which is a one time process by submitting your 10+2 marks sheets, verification, Aadhar and Passport. 

3. Flying Training:

Once the Ground Training is completed the Cadet will start his Flying Training of 200 Hours and 20 Hours of Simulator Training  in any of the FTO in India or abroad depending on his/her comfort and budget with our expert guidance and reviews of our Wave Aviators Alumni and current students flying at respective FTO's. The split of 200 Hours is as below:

Total: 200 Hours

(A): 100 Hours as Pilot In Command in which  50 Hours as Pilot in Command on a Cross Country Flight.

(B): 5 Hours as Pilot in Command during a Night Flight.

(C): 20 Hours of Flight in Instrument Flight Rules.

(D): Remaining Hours is used for Cadets Initial Training .

-CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AFTER CPL-

1.Theoretical Knowledge / Ground Instructor:

One can opt for teaching Theoretical Subjects to CADET pilots undergoing CPL, you may get promoted to a position of Chief Ground Instructor depending on your experience in teaching and fulfilling DGCA Requirements.

CGI is a position where you will plan all training lessons, schedule and monitor Ground instructors working in the school, tracking students progress in the flying school.

2.Assistant Flying Training Instructor:

One can opt in as a Flying Instructor to give Flying Lessons (Flying Training)  to CADET pilots undergoing CPL. Here you have an opportunity to log 800-1000 Hours Every year and raise to position of Chief Flying Instructor who heads Flying Schools in India.


CFI is the top most position of any FTO, Handling Students Flying Activities and carrying Flying tests for students who are finishing CPL.

3. Airline Pilot (JFO/First Officer)

Once you have a CPL in hands you have two ways to get into right seat as First Officer / JFO 

Option 1: Choose an Aircraft (Airbus-320, Boeing-737, ATR 72-600/500, Bombardier Q-400) of your choice and check Jobs Projected for that aircraft in India, if trajectory looks good go ahead and do your Type Rating from any DGCA Approved TRTO considering your Budget and Comfort, then When an airline comes up with vacancies for this Type Rated Vacancy attend Exam and clear your interview and join as JFO/First officer.

Option 2: Keep Preparing for Airline Exams and Interviews and attend exams conducted by any airline for CPL Entry, once you clear exams and interview Airline will issue an Letter of Intent and asks to do Type Rating depending on their requirement, once you finish the training you will be hired on that specific aircraft as a First officer or JFO.
